City Advice February Hours

City Advice hold weekly drop-in sessions at Toynbee Hall every Thursday from 10-12.
Please note that there will be no session on 1st Feb.  The drop-in session will resume on Thursday, 8th Feb, from 10-12.

Carers Survey for City and Hackney Dementia Alliance Board

The City & Hackney Dementia Alliance Board is a group of statutory and voluntary sector organisations and people with lived experience of dementia. They work collaboratively to identify gaps and improve services for people with dementia and their families.

They would like to hear about your experiences of services and support as a carer of someone with dementia and have prepared a survey for carers to complete. The information you give will help them understand your situation and needs. It will also help them understand where services are working well or where changes might be needed to improve the support you are offered.

Freedom 65 Haircuts- Discount on haircuts for over-65s

Leonard And Michael Barbers are offering the Freedom 65 Haircut, for customers over 65. Haircuts for over 65s are now at a reduced price of £18 rather than the standard £26. They also offer a discount card where the fifth haircut is completely free. Leonard and Michael Barbers are located at 1-2 Poppins Court Fleet Street, London EC4A 4AX. It is a walk in service, Monday to Friday 9-6pm. Cash or Card. They are predominantly a men’s barbers but can offer a women’s service if you book in advance.

New Dial-a-Ride booking system

A new app based Dial-a-Ride system will now be available to download and use from Monday 20th November onwards.

Dial-a-Ride is a vital free service that supports older and disabled Londoners, to get them to where they need to be. The new app-based Dial-a-Ride booking system, offers members and caregivers access to an additional channel to the existing telephone booking system and allows members to book journeys and manage their bookings.

What are the changes?

The new app will improve the accessibility and efficiency of the service with customers being able to book more quickly, track where their driver is, update any details related to their ride, and cancel a trip without having to call the contact centre. Dial-a-Ride have recently extended the operating hours of the service, meaning their service operates until midnight on all nights of the week.

Who is eligible for Dial-a-Ride?

You have to become a member to use Dial-a-Ride. Eligiblity criteria and how to apply can be found here.

We Swim Barbican

We’re delighted to announce that WeSwim’s third club is at Golden Lane Leisure Centre in the City Of London. If you have any general questions about swimming with WeSwim you can view them here.

Where?
Golden Lane Leisure Centre is based at Fann St, Fane Lane, Golden Lane Estate, London EC1Y 0SH, 0.2 miles from Barbican Station and is a multi-sport community sports centre. There are steps or a pedestrian ramp to access to the leisure centre, with level access once inside. Access to the pool is via a ladder or chair hoist. Lockers require a padlock. We have dedicated use of the 20m pool, where you will be supported by our team of friendly, enthusiastic and trained volunteers, providing a safe, private environment to swim in.

When?
The weekly session will be held on Wednesdays from 7pm to 8pm. After your swim there will be an opportunity to chat to other swimmers and volunteers over a well earned refreshments in the swimming pool reception.

Who?
The sessions and community at WeSwim Barbican will be led by a fabulous committee, who will also act as our safeguarding officers and will manage a team of volunteers to support our swimmers.

Cost?
We ask swimmers for a £2.00 contribution per session to help support the on-going operation of the club. If you have worries about being able to pay this on a regular basis please talk to tash@weswim.club.

Healthwatch City of London is looking for new Trustees!

Healthwatch City of London is committed to working with all residents including children and young people, those with disabilities and City Workers.

Trustees are appointed for a term of four years with the option of applying for a further term. Trustees are required to attend board meetings at least eight times a year of which one should be AGM and another the strategic ‘Away-Day’.

We welcome applications from anyone who lives or works in the City of London. It is an unpaid role that can look excellent on a CV. Healthwatch CoL are looking to diversify their board and welcome younger applicants to apply! It is also a flexible role that can fit around your other responsibilities.

Warm Home Discount 2023/2024

The Warm Home Discount Scheme for winter 2023 to 2024 opens on 16 October 2023. See more information on the Government website or on the Age UK website.

You may be eligible for £150 off your energy bills. The rules changed last year so now you shouldn’t need to apply – you should automatically receive the credit to your electricity account between October and March, or given to you in a voucher if you use a prepayment meter.

Who is eligible?

  • In England, you may be eligible if you receive the Guaranteed Credit element of Pension Credit, OR
  • You receive a different qualifying benefit, have high energy costs and your property is less energy-efficient.
    • Qualifying means-tested benefits are:
      • Housing Benefit
      • Universal Credit
      • Savings Credit (of Pension Credit)

Is my energy provider giving out Warm Home Discounts?

Some providers do not take part in the scheme – you can see a list of energy providers who give out Warm Home Discounts here.

How do I apply?

  • You should receive a letter telling you that you’re eligible for the discount, letting you know if this will be applied for you automatically.
  • In the event that you don’t receive a letter before mid-January 2024, but you believe that you should be eligible, you should contact the Warm Home Discount Helpline (0800 107 8002) or get in touch with Green Doctors for support.

We are so pleased to share that the amazing Home Help Service from Age UK East London is now available for City residents! It is a paid for service at £25 per hour, and you can organise to see the same friendly face each week. The minimum commitment is one hour a week. They are a brilliant team and can help you with all sorts of tasks at home, such as phone calls and post, going with you to appointments, food shopping, picking up prescriptions, and much much more!

City Advice Christmas Hours and New Year Plans

City Advice will close at 12 noon on Friday 22nd Dec and reopen on Tuesday 2nd Jan. There will be no service during these times and anyone with an emergency should check the local authority website for details of emergency provision. People can call us from 10am on Tuesday 2nd of Jan.  

We will have fewer staff from Monday 18th Dec to Fri 5th Jan so please be aware there may be a delay in responding to referrals, emails or calls.

LIFT Focus Group

Earn £30 – take part in a focus group for City of London community members.

 

We are looking for members of the local community to take part in a focus group for audience research for LIFT FESTIVAL 2024, London International Festival of Theatre. You will be paid £30 to attend a friendly in-person group discussion about the festival’s communication strategy. We are particularly interested in talking to you if you are not a regular theatre attendee.
